Established in 1926 alongside the introduction of the science stream at Union Christian College, Aluva, the Department of Chemistry has a rich legacy of academic excellence and pioneering research. Under the visionary leadership of its founder, Prof. T. R. Anantharaman, and later Dr. A. M. Chacko, the department has steadily evolved, launching the B.Sc. Chemistry program in 1953 and the M.Sc. program in 1982. Recognized as a Postgraduate Research Centre by Mahatma Gandhi University in 1984, the department has been a proud recipient of both DST-FIST sponsorship (2010) and DBT-STAR status (2018). Equipped with five state-of-the-art laboratories and a wide array of modern instrumentation, the department fosters a vibrant research culture in areas such as Material Science, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Catalysis, Photochemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry, and Chemical and Bio Sensors. Organometallic Chemistry, Bio-Inorganic Chemistry, Macrocycles, Biomaterials, Energy Storage Applications, Polymer Science and Nanotechnology. With nine dynamic faculty members—seven of whom are approved research guides—the department actively engages in research collaborations with institutions like ISRO, NIT Calicut, MGU, and CUSAT and has made significant contributions to both teaching and curriculum development. The department has established several MOUs and collaborations to enhance research and internship opportunities. These include: Indian Rubber Manufacturers Research Association (IRMRA), Thane, Maharashtra; Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam; International School of Photonics, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Cochin; Department of Applied Chemistry, CUSAT; and Sophisticated Test and Instrumentation Centre, CUSAT. Our alumni include renowned scientists and professionals in prestigious institutions across the globe, reflecting the department’s enduring impact and commitment to excellence in chemical sciences.
