 SESSION REPORTS:

As a Centenary initiative, IQAC and Post Graduate and Research Department of Chemistry of Union Christian College Aluva  partnered with Guru Angad Dev teaching learning centre (GAD-TLC) of MHRD, Govt.of India,  under Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), SGTB Khalsa College, Delhi University in  organizing a one day National Webinar on “ Towards Excellence in Higher Education in India in 21st Century ” (for all subject teachers and students)  on Friday, 28th August at 10.30 AM to 2:00 PM on Zoom webinar platform with live streaming in the Union Christian College facebook.

The Inaugural session of the national webinar began at 10:30 AM on 28th August 2020, by invoking the blessings of God Almighty through a prayer song sung by Ms. Amina (II B.Sc. Chemistry, Union Christian College, Aluva). It was followed by the welcome address by the Dr. Simi Pushpan K, webinar coordinator/convenor who welcomed the Chief guest, Prof. Dr. Ved Prakash, Former Chairman, University Grants Commission, Government of India New Delhi, Guest of honour, Prof. Dr. Sabu Thomas, Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala resource persons (Guest of Eminence and Keynote speaker Prof A. K. Bakhshi, Chairman, GAD-TLC and VC, PDM University, Haryana and distinguished speaker Dr Vimal Rarh, Project head and Joint Director, GAD-TLC and all participants and organizing committee members to the webinar.

Dr. Vimal Rarh, Project Head & Joint Director, GAD-TLC of MHRD, introduced the participants to GAD-TLC, its significance and functions. The next speaker was our Guest of honour, Prof. Dr. Sabu Thomas, Vice-Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, was introduced by Ms. Smitha Roy, HOD and Organizing Secretary of the webinar.  Prof. Dr. Sabu Thomas gave us an insightful and encouraging as well as inspiring personal account of how a great teacher can be a role model to generations of students and how they contribute in moulding their future. Our Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Ved Prakash, former Chairman, University Grants Commission, Government of India, New Delhi, addressed the gathering on “Covid Disruption to Education and Way Forward”. He was introduced to the participants by Dr. Manju M George, co-convenor of the webinar. Prof. Dr. Ved Prakash highlighted the need to reach out to all students and exhorted us to find the gaps in the existing policies and work towards bridging those gaps thereby finding opportunities despite all odds offered by the pandemic.

Our Guest of Eminence and Keynote Speaker, Prof A. K. Bakhshi, Chairman, GAD-TLC and VC, PDM University, Haryana, was introduced to the webinar platform by Dr. Jenish Paul, Joint Secretary of the webinar. Prof A. K. Bakhshi gave an excellent talk on the title “Towards Excellence in Higher Education in India in 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities”. He gave a thought-provoking account on how education system can prevent the collapse of nation and the need to incorporate current research into our curriculum.

Next session was wonderfully handled by Dr. Vimal Rarh, Project Head & Joint Director, GAD-TLC of MHRD, who was introduced to the participants by Dr. Simi Pushpan K, Convenor of the webinar.  Dr. Vimal Rarh is synonymous with the word edupreneur in India who gave an excellent presentation on the “Role of Teachers in Technology Driven Higher Education”. She gave us an insight into the basic philosophy of MOOCs and opportunities available for tech savvy teachers in higher education in dissemination of knowledge in this platform and the need to enhance our technological knowledge to enhance the quality of education system.

There was an interactive session for around 20 minutes wherein the speakers had productive discussion with the participants and answered their queries. It was then followed by the webinar report by the convenor of the webinar. Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr. Manju M George, IQAC Coordinator and co-convenor of the webinar, Union Christian College, Aluva. The session was concluded by singing the National Anthem.
