Webinar on Female Diseases
The postgraduate and research department of Union Christian College, Aluva in association with the Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, organized a webinar on “Female Diseases” on 30 October, 2021. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Kavitha P., Assistant Physician, Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal and the program was coordinated by Dr. Neethumol Varghese, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Union Christian College, Aluva.
Women’s health should be prioritized for the entire nation. The health crisis that women face is unfathomable. Because of lifestyle decisions and ignorance, women’s health conditions have recently taken a leap. Women deal with more health issues than men. Dr. Kavitha has covered almost all diseases that women face due to ignorance and carelessness and also pointed out the importance of women’s health. Women have a unique set of healthcare challenges and are at higher risk of developing certain conditions and diseases than men. The leading causes of death for women include heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, all of which could potentially be treated or prevented if identified early enough. Students became more conscious about their health and they found the webinar an informative session.
Popular Science Webinar Lecture
A webinar was organized jointly by the Departments of Chemistry and Biosciences on the topic “Biology in space : The unique features of space laboratories and challenges for laboratories” by Dr.K. G. Sreejalekshmi, Associate Professor, IIST, Thiruvananthapuram as part of the Popular Science Lecture series. The webinar was organized on 13 November, 2021 through Zoom Platform and was live-streamed through College You Tube Channel. The proposed audience was research scholars and PG students. Around 144 participants attended the program.
DBT Star Sponsored Centenary Lecture Series
A webinar was organized by the Department of Chemistry in association with IQAC and Research Forum of Union Christian College on Intellectual Property Rights through Google Meet on 5 Febraury, 2022. The webinar had Dr. Kavitha Chalakkal, Assistant Professor, Inter University Centre for IPR Studies, CUSAT as the distinguished speaker and she talked on “Introduction to Intellectual Property Rights”. The proposed audience was research scholars and PG students. Around 120 participants attended the program.
Prof. A. M. Chacko Memorial Lecture
Prof. A. M. Chacko Memorial Lecture is conducted every year by the department in the fond memory of Prof. A. M. Chacko, former Principal and Head of the Department. The program was conducted in online mode using Google Meet. The webinar was conducted on 19 February, 2022 and the lecture was given by Dr. Anoop Anand, Scientist, DRDO, Pune on the topic “Hybrid Structural Composites”.
DBT Star Sponsored Centenary Lecture Series
A webinar on “Ethics in Research Publications” was organized by the Department of Chemistry in association with IQAC and Research Forum forum of Union Christian College through Google Meet. The webinar was conducted on 26 February, 2022 and the speaker was Dr.Tony Roy, Post-Doctoral Researcher, University of Gottingen, Germany. The proposed audience was research scholars and PG students. The main highlight of the talk was regarding simultaneous submission in journal papers and also ethics in research publications.
DBT Star Sponsored Science Day Lecture
A webinar was organized by the Department of Chemistry on 3 March,2022 in connection with the National Science Day. We had an eminent speaker, Dr. Kana M. Sureshan from the School of Chemistry, IISER, Thiruvananthapuram who talked on “Asymmetric Catalysis”. The talk was delivered through Google Meet platform and Bachelors’ and Masters’ students attended the program.
Prof. T. R. Anantharaman Memorial Lecture
Prof. T. R. Anantharaman Memorial Lecture is conducted every year by the department with financial assistance from the family of Prof. T. R. Anantharaman (Instituted an endowment in memory of their parents). This year’s lecture was given by Dr. D. Selvakumar, Scientist-F, DEBL-DRDO, Bangalore on” Surface modification of optical fiber probes for biosensing applications”. The lecture was held on 5 March, 2022 and was attended by students of the department.
Department of Chemistry, Union Christian College was selected to conduct a program titled Urjakiran with funding from Energy Management Centre, Kerala done in association with Centre for Environment and Development (CED), Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Kalamassery Constituency comprising of Alangadu, Kadungaloor, Karumaloor & Kunnukara Grama Panchayats. Energy Conservation Rally and Signature Campaign was conducted on 20th November, 2021. We also conducted a public webinar titled “Go Electric” and speaker was Dr. Neena George, Assistant Professor, Maharajas College.
Chemistry Association Activities
The Chemistry Association conducted an Inter college Quiz competition on 30 March, 2022 in the T.B. Ninan Hall. From the 4 teams selected to the finals, students from Bharat Mata College, Thrikkakara secured the cash price and the Ever rolling Trophy. This was followed by a Chemistry Association conducted inter departmental light music competition. Mr. Sujith Jayan, II BSc Chemistry student was the best male singer and Ms. Ameena K, III BSc Chemistry student was selected as the best female singer.
