2022-23

World Environment Day Celebrations

The World Environment Day lecture was organized by the Department of Chemistry on 6 June, 2022 by Dr. Sebastian Joseph, Environmental/ Film Historian, General Secretary of Kerala History Congress on “June 5 and the making(s) of planetray consciousness”. Final year degree students and second semester PG students of the department attended the program, making a total strength of 60. The program was conducted at the T.B. Ninan Hall of our college. The speaker talked about the historic developments in the world related to environment and the measures taken for safeguarding of the planet. The program was recorded by The Free Thinkers Forum and is made available in their YouTube site.

Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series

As part of the Centenary celebrations of the college, Department decided to organize a lecture series, by inviting the distinguished alumni of the department as keynote speakers. The first lecture of the series was conducted at T.B. Ninan Hall. Dr. Georgeena, currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University College, Dublin, Ireland was the invited speaker.  She received her Bachelor degree in Chemistry from Union Christian College, Aluva. She gave a talk on “Research and its possibilities” to final year BSc students and 1 st and 2 nd year PG students.

World Ozone Day Celebrations

As part of the World Ozone Day celebrations, the chemistry association, Department of Chemistry organized a webinar through Google Meet. The webinar was taken by Dr. Nikhil Chandra P., Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, S.N. College, Kollam on 16 September, 2022 on the topic “Environmental concerns and sustainable development: Issues and challenges before us”. Degree students and PG students attended the program, making a total strength of 70. The speaker talked about the issues and challenges in the world related to ozone layer and the measures taken for safeguarding of the ozone layer.

World Water Monitoring Day Celebrations

In connection with the World Water Monitoring Day Celebrations, a webinar was conducted on “Water Quality Monitoring: Making real-time decisions with real- time data”. The webinar was jointly organized by the Departments of Chemistry and Biosciences through Google meet on 20 September, 2022 and Dr. Harikumar P.S., Chief Scientist(Retd), CWRDM, Calicut was the guest speaker. Degree students and PG students from both the departments attended the programme and we had over 58 participants.

Inter-College Quiz Competition 

The Chemistry Association conducted an Inter college Quiz competition on 27 March, 2023 in the T.B. Ninan Hall. From the 4 teams selected to the finals, students from St. Xaviers College, Aluva secured the cash price and the Ever rolling Trophy.

Gifted Children Program

Department of Chemistry, U.C. College was selected to conduct the Gifted Children Program on 25 February, 2023. The program aims at creating a motivation and an inspiration for the selected high school students studying in various government schools.

Popular Science Lecture:

A seminar was organized jointly by the Departments of Chemistry, Botany, Zoology & Biosciences in association with Indian Women Scientists Association (IWSA) and was supported by Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS)-DAE. The lecture was delivered by Dr. C N Ramchand, CEO, Mag GenomeTechnologies Pvt Ltd, India & USA on 14 February, 2023 on the topic “Drugs and Biologics: Discovery and development with special reference to preclinical, regulatory and clinical development”.

Urjakiran

Department of Chemistry, Union Christian College was selected to conduct a program titled Urjakiran with funding from Energy Management Centre, Kerala done in association with Centre for Environment and Development (CED), and Karumaloor Grama Panchayat. Energy Conservation Rally and Signature Campaign was conducted on 23 January, 2023. A seminar was organized to generate awareness among the general public and Kudumbasree members were the beneficiaries.
